Toyota tacoma boasts a heritage of solid service as a work truck along with a hard-earned reputation as a winning off-road race truck. toyota makes a tacoma to fit almost any work-related or recreational pursuit. The tacoma line starts with a simple two-wheel-drive work truck loaded with nothing but quality, durability and reliability. The price and content of the sr5 package varies with cab, engine, and driveline. V6 double cabs and v6 xtracab 4x4s can be ordered with a similar limited package, which includes most sr5 content plus power windows, locks and mirrors. Again the precise content depends on the body style. a stepside bed option 310) features bulging rear fenders and a small step behind the doors (not available on double cabs). prerunner is a 4x2 truck with an off-road suspension. Prerunners are available in standard, xtracab, or double cab configurations, and with either the 2. 7-liter inline-4 or 3. 4-liter v6. Prerunners start at $14,015. xtracab s-runner is a low-riding street sports model with a suspension tuned for handling on pavement. S-runner comes with the 3. 4-liter v6, five-speed transmission, sport seats, and color-keyed trim. the trd (toyota racing development) off-road package can be added to 2wd prerunner or 4wd xtracab models. The trd package adds bilstein shocks, a locking rear differential, increased-rate front and rear springs, a larger stabilizer bar, p265/70r16 b. Goodrich tires, overfenders (color-keyed on limited models), and special graphics. also available from trd is a fully warranted, dealer-installed supercharger for the 3. 4-liter v6. The limited and the s-runner each had the 3. 4-liter v6 and xtracab body style. But that's where the similarities ended. the 4x4 limited has a tough, off-road look to it, with big, beefy tires and enough ground clearance to hop over medium-sized rocks and stumps. The s-runner is much lower to the ground, and is graced with bodywork add-ons that go well with its handsome five-spoke alloy wheels and low-profile tires. The xtracab has a little more legroom (42. 8 inches versus 41. 7), plus room to recline the seat. standard in xtracabs is a 60/40 split bench front seat, comfortable for driver and passenger. The bucket seats in the xtracab limited we test-drove felt too big for the cab, giving the space a cramped feeling. But they sure were comfortable, and that lumbar support in the driver's seat was a godsend on a long drive. The cloth trim seems to be of good quality. In the extended rear cab area there's a little table that folds up to serve as either a cup holder or as a support for a child-restraint seat. double cabs are reasonably roomy in the back-seat area. There's lots of knee room and good headroom, but the upright seatback makes the space most suitable for short trips. White-faced gauges are available on some models. Controls well placed and functional. An assist strap is provided on the driver's-side windshield pillar. The tacoma has a pull-out hand brake, which is inconvenient and seems old-fashioned. They drive quite a bit differently, but all do a good job in the roles for which they are designed. the two-wheel-drive work truck rides smoothly and handles reasonably well. Off-road versions offer impressive handling and capability in the rough stuff. The toyota 2. 4-liter is economical to run, with an epa-estimated city/highway mileage of 22/25 mpg when matched with a five-speed manual transmission. It delivers 190 horsepower at 4800 rpm, with 220 pounds-feet of torque at 3600 rpm. Even at that it's still reasonably economical, with an epa city/highway mileage rating of 18/22 for a 4x2 with a five-speed manual. the five-speed manual transmission shifts smoothly and makes the tacoma more fun to drive. The tacoma feels like it would go anywhere, and get there in a big hurry. The trd suspension is fantastic, whether going slow or hauling. Even deep, bounding ruts failed to upset the handling in medium-speed corners. The trd tacoma rides reasonably well, though it's stiff at low speeds. That stiffness pays off at higher speeds, however. Like all pickups, it feels much smoother with a little weight in the bed. That's a convenience when a good road goes bad. The available push-button locking differential forces the rear wheels to turn at the same speed. This enables the tacoma to walk out of ankle-deep sand with absolutely no trouble. The locking rear differential is indispensable for driving in an area prone to mud and snow. on dry pavement, the tacoma 4x4 holds corners surprisingly well. Its 190-horsepower 3. 4-liter v6 produces a deep-sounding (but not obnoxious) exhaust note. The sport-tuned suspension setup includes tokico gas shock absorbers, increased-rate springs, and front and rear stabilizer bars. Ride height is reduced by one inch from the standard 4x2. Though a little jouncy when empty, the ride never felt harsh, and handling was superb. As long as the weather doesn't get too slippery, the s-runner is as entertaining as anything we've recently driven. It is so much fun that we kept searching for reasons to go for a spin. we used an s-runner to move some furniture from maryland to virginia and, like all pickups, it rode better when loaded down. Overall, the tacoma is an impressive package. there are bigger trucks and there are more powerful trucks than the tacoma. But there are few 4x4 pickups that offer th. The v6 deluxe comes well equipped for less than $20,000. The mustang gt boasts a multi-valve, overhead-cam v8 that produces 300 horsepower. Both are available with a manual or automatic transmission. More importantly, both deliver the bold styling, rear-drive performance and affordability that have been mustang hallmarks for decades. retro inspired, to be sure, the mustang is nonetheless a thoroughly modern car. Launched for 2005 with a clean-sheet design, the mustang is faster and more agile than ever. It's also quieter and better built (even the convertible), and it rides more smoothly. Its interior is a throwback to the original mustang, but it's also functional and well finished. For 2006, a new pony package gives v6 mustangs all the show, if not the go, of the v8. The v8s are available with trendy new 18-inch wheels for 2006. a family car, the mustang isn't. Interior space is limited for a car of its exterior dimensions, and the back seat might better be described as a package shelf. Yet the 2006 mustang holds true to an idea that still appeals to people of all ages decades after it was launched. the ford mustang has been an icon of american performance since its introduction in 1964. It created the pony car genre, and after 40-plus years of competition with the barracuda, camaro, firebird and others, it's the only one left. We, and a few hundred thousands others, are glad it's still here. lineupthe 2006 ford mustang lineup probably seems more complicated than it really is. The gt is now available with two distinct 18-inch wheel designs, as well as two new exterior colors: vista blue clearcoat metallic and tungsten grey clearcoat metallic. So trimmed, the mustang looks more aggressively handsome than ever, and nearly identical to the concept cars that grabbed everyone's attention at the 2004 north american international auto show. nothing says modern american sporty car better than this mustang. Its long hood and short rear deck capitalize on 40 years of mustang history. The current mustang features classic design cues that have defined mustangs since the 1960s: c-scoops in the sides, three-element tail lamps and a galloping horse badge in the center of the grille. Its menacing shark-like nose is reminiscent of the 1967 model. Everything under the car has been upgraded substantially from previous mustang levels: bigger brakes by nearly 20 percent, completely new front and rear suspension designs that yield much quieter, smoother ride as well as much more precise steering during hard cornering, improved engines and new transmissions. Optional antilock brakes bundled with traction control give any driver much more of a fighting chance in bad situations by allowing the driver to brake and steer at the same time. the engines are mounted to the body with hydraulic engine mounts, which absorb and counteract vibration and pulsing. By adapting ideas and components from luxury cars, ford has given the current mustang a level of sophistication its predecessors never had. Yet the mustang heritage of low-cost performance and flashy styling has not been compromised one iota. We know, because we've driven every generation since the original debuted in the spring of 1964. perhaps most retro of all mustang features is a new-for-2006 pony package for v6 models. This includes a grille with gt-style round fog lamps and a chrome bezel, or corral, around the traditional mustang prancing horse. The package includes 17-inch wheels, front-fender pony badges, a lower door stripe, and a rear spoiler. interiorthe styling themes that so readily identify the 2006 mustang are apparent inside, too. The interior is as blatantly throwback as the exterior, and nearly as well done. It's sporty and crisp in appearance and straightforward in function. there's a very heavy dose of 1967 mustang inside, with two distinct right and left pods, blended with modern touches. Chrome-ringed air vents align across the dash, precisely in line with the gauges, and the steering wheel has three spokes with a center hub marked by the horse and tricolor bars logo. While some of the materials have a cost-saving look and feel, the package is not bad given the high style and price of entry. An interior upgrade package, with satin or dark-finish aluminum inserts, goes a long way toward eliminating traces of cheapness. Speaking of brightening, however, there's enough shiny metal on this car's dash and steering wheel to create some glare problems for drivers on sunny days. Just like the old days. these are the good old days in terms of roominess in the mustang. Thanks to a longer wheelbase and larger overall size, there is a lot more hip, leg, elbow and shoulder room inside this mustang that in any previous generation. We found the front bucket seats to be comfortable, supportive and retentive in hard corners. The 2+2 back seat, however, isn't much more accommodating than before, and it's not a place adults will want to spend any time. the trunk, however, is as large as those in some more overtly practical sedans, and the folding rear seat expands cargo space even further. the basic sound system that comes with the car is pretty darn good. The 500-watt upgrade is reasonably priced in the premium package, and adds a six-cd changer. The 1000-watt upgrade will impress most audiophiles, but the extra subwoofers in the trunk steal a good chunk of cargo space. We'd be inclined to pass on those. driving impressionthe 2006 mustang improves those things that have appealed to so many different kinds of drivers for more than 40 years, and it nearly eliminates some traditionally bad pony car traits. In general, the good has gotten better and the bad, less so. the previous-generation mustang, a modified, welded version of a chassis that dated to 1979, was about as stiff as wet rope. Ford claims the current mustang's body/frame is 31 percent stiffer, and we won't argue. This mustang is simply much more rigid and rattle-free than its predecessor. A rigid foundation provides the basis for a host of good things, including improved ride quality, sharper handling and less interior vibration. the new-found solidity even applies to the convertible. The auto-lsd replaces the mechanical limited-slip in all applications where it was previously available. 2009 access cab models have a redesigned rear seat for improved comfort, as well as standard power windows and door locks. 2009 tacoma sr5 models get new seat fabric. the audio systems have been upgraded for 2009 and all come satellite-radio ready. The optional premium jbl six-cd system is now bluetooth-compatible and has an integrated satellite radio system that includes a three-month trial subscription to xm satellite radio. And there are numerous interior and exterior trim enhancements and changes for 2009. for those who drive hard, there is a dealer-installed trd big brake system developed by engineers with the toyota technical center and toyota racing development to provide effective braking performance under sustained heavy use. Its on-road handing is responsive, its off-road capability is proven. The double cab delivers more rear-seat comfort than most of the competition, with enough room to rival a small sedan. Overall, the tacoma provides the driver with a good driving position, and big mirrors afford a good view to the rear. cup holders are provided in the center console area. On models that don't have sport seats, the front passenger's seatback flips down to form a tray table or to make room for long objects, a handy feature. Big rotary knobs make it easy to adjust cabin temperature even with gloves on; the knobs are electronic, so they're easy to twist. The radio is fully integrated into the upper center stack and it's easy to operate. Cds sound good through the jbl speakers.
